John T Niezgodski SR. was my great grandfather whom I remember from the early 1950's. I do not have a clear photo of him but my mother, Janette (Niezgodski) Dhoore may have. She is on the Weat coast and may not want to send the original to me on the East coast. Being elderly, she may not be able to get a copy of it/them made. I do not know when I will be able to go and see her.

I don't think she has any photo of the cigar factory. In fact, the only recollection I have of the cigar manufacturing is her mention that they made them in the basement of their home. I don't know if this was before or after the depression of 1929. The home they once owned was very large and sometime after the depression became a nursing home where my great grandmother, Thecla (Tillie) Buczkowski Niezgodski became a resident until her death in 1965.

Also, my aunt Elaine Niezgodski Pauwels, died on September 07, 2005 in Bloomington, Indiana and is buried in South Bend.

Goniec Polski November 1909

Ignacy Bartkowiak Has died on Friday evening a 10:30. He died in his home at 443 S. Walnut St. This completed the life of Ignacy. He had been ill for the last 2 years with stomach problems and for the last 4 week he was in pain from which he never recovered.
Ignacy was born in the year 1856 in Lukowie in the greater Province of Poznan.
He came to America when he was 15 and lived in South Bend the entire time.
He was married at the age of 27.
He belonged to St. Stanislaus Kostka and St. Hedwige Societies.
He is survived by his wife,Jadwiga (Harriet) and children Anthony, Stanley , Ignace, Casimer and Felix daughters Angela Zakrowski , Prakseda (Priscilla ?)not sure if that is right,Angela and Magdalyn.
Funeral will be Monday morning at St. Hedwige Church and burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetary

MAY BE RELATED TO MICHAL (No Definite Proof)
I am not local, but my wife Kathleen Nowacki (who spoke to you last week on another question) recevied an email from the secretary at Saint Casimir that shows that Ignacy's wife Hedwigis is the godmother of Joseph Bartkowiak. Joseph was born March 11 1899 son of Michael and Helen. So if no relationship between Michael and Ignacy, why did Michael and Helen chose Ignacy's wife as the godmother to their son Joseph. Also, the godfather for Joseph is Charles Wentland who happened to live at 444 Walnut in the 1900 census which is the house across the street from Ignacy Bartkowiak.

When the depression hit he went into CCC Camp.

Oral History from Frank D Piechorowski:
He used to tell me stories of CCC camp.

He worked as a baker there.

He used to make the BEST pie crusts. He would mix them up right on the counter top, no measuring... did it all by feel. I remember he would take all the extra crust bits and cut them into strips and bake them with Cinnamon and sugar. I can still taste them 20 years later.

Once, he and the boys snuck out of camp one night and raided a local watermelon field, they brought all the watermelons back to camp and hid them all in the ceiling. The weight of the melons up there caused the ceiling to sag the commander noticed and had one of the men get a ladder and nail the ceiling back up. Well of course the when he tried to nail it back up, he hit a watermelon and this red liquid started to drip down on the floor, the commander though they had a body up in the ceiling. He said they got in SO much trouble.

In another, he told me of one way they would "Initiate" the new guys. They would come in, in the middle of the night, and have a "Short Arm Inspection". One guy would act as the officer, and one as a doctor. The "Doctor" would have a can of black shoe polish. After they were "Inspected" they would get a dob of shoe polish on them. Of course, as soon as they saw their "doctor" in the ranks with them they knew they had been had, but shoe polish can't be washed off... It has to wear off.

We know that Frank came to work for Ludwik (Uncle Louie) when his mother died, c. 1936

Oral History from Evelyn:
Kasper Slisz, Evelyn Father taught Frank how to hunt and fish, in that time for food, not for sport.

He married Evelyn and went to work for Oliver Corp.

Oral History from James:
1938/39 - A die fell out of the "Hot Hammer" at Oliver Corp and hit Frank in the knee, casuing the begining of his knee problems.

Frank was forced to retire from Oliver's in 1974 on disablility.

In 1964 James worked at Olivers on summer vacation on the same hot hammer

I know for sure that this Mary who died in 1912 at the age of 103 is indeed Agnes' and Michael's mother (Agnes was my gr-gr-grandmother). I have this from family records from my grandfather. I also have the coroner's report on her death and it was signed by Michael. She was living with him and he refers to her as his mother in his statement. The only thing that I can figure is that the obituary was incorrect and should have read that all of her children were dead, except for two. On the 1910 census, she was living with Agnes and Frank Paczkowski and it said that she had borne 10 or 12 children (I can't remember exactly how many and I can't find my printout right now). Anyway, I believe that most of them must have remained in Poland or had passed away.

I believe that Stephen and Andrew were probably her children, but have not been able to prove this conclusively (or to my satisfaction), even though Andrew's father is listed as Martin in church records. The problem that I have with Andrew being the son of this Mary is that she would have been 52 at the time of his birth. That's possible but not very probable. As it was, she was 43 and 48 when Agnes and Michael were born. Stephen's children lived in Ohio and moved to S. Bend after his death (which I have not been able to confirm the date of). Agnes and Michael also lived in Ohio for a short amount of time after immigrating (1872) and before coming to Indiana. This seems to indicate that there is some family link.

I do have Mary's death certificate. It lists her husband as Marcus (This may be a copying error of "Marcin"). Michael's death certificate lists his parents as Martin and Maryanna. I have seen no immigration, death, or cemetery information on Martin. I believe that Mary immigrated on her own as a widow. She immigrated late in life (in her 70's). I have not found her immigration record. I have found the immigration information of someone with the same name, but the age and the year of immigration don't match that listed in her obit. Her maiden name, Kaslowski, came from family records (my grandfather). I have not seen this anywhere else.

Stegersbach (Hungarina: Szentelek)
Largest community of the Güssing district (in 1930!), consisting of the core
village
plus areas called Steinriegel, Schoada, Vorstadt, Hühnerzipf, Steinbach,
Bergler-Häuser, Schinderische Häuser, Graben and Zigeunerlager.

Village name first mentioned in 1289 ("Stegraifebach"). Stegersbach had a
"Dreißigstamt" (customs office; the "Dreissigst" was the 30th part of the value of the
goods). From the time of the Croatian settlement (16th century) until 1861
Stegersbach consisted of two separate communities, each with a "Richter" of its
own. In 1650, Michael WENSITS was Richter of Croatian Stegersbach, while
Thomas RATH was Richter of German Stegersbach.

Especially the Croats owned many horses and worked as carters, they travelled as far as Triest and Fiume.

Cholera (epidemic disease) in 1832 killed many.

Again in 1849 80 inhabitants died of Cholera from 8 July to 24 August.

In 1874 the whole "German part" of Stegersbach (52 houses and the St. Antonius
chapel) burned down.

The local BATTHYANY estate was - like in Rauchwart - sold to Comtess
Theodora KOTTULINSKY in 1892 (from Prince Alfred de MONTENUOVO, son of
Prince Wilhelm de MONTENUOVO and Comtess Juliane BATTHYANY). The
Stegersbach estate was also subsequently sold to the same Budapest bank. The bank
sold the land to local farmers in small pieces.

Proposed Change: Marianna Andrysiak (I03772)
Tree: The Piechorowski Family

My husband's great grandmother was Mary Andrysiak. She married Martin Stelmaszewski and they lived in both Grand Rapids, Mi and Toledo, Ohio. I think that they married after coming to America. She died in Toledo, Ohio (if you look at the records on the new Mormon site - rch.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0) Her death certificate says she was born - 04 Dec 1868. She died on 09 Sep 1949. Her mother is listed as Antonina Pierschalska and her father is Rasimir.

I think she had at least two daughters - Helen and Angelina - my husband's grandmother. Helen married James Ignatius Brezinski and Angelina married John Krajewski who was the son of John Krajewski and Margaret Walkowiak. This was all in Toledo. Helen and Angelina were born in Grand Rapids.

Mary and Martin took in two little girls from the Andrysiak side - Irene and Wanda Janas (you can see them with them in 1920) Their mother was Josephine Andrysiak - Josephine herself was living with the family of Cassimer Andrysiak (age 66)and Antonina (age 60) in Grand Rapids Ward 8, Kent, Michigan in the 1900 census. I think that based on family stories, these might have been their grand children or they were aunt/uncle but maybe not. I can check with another relative.

I also found this information on the Poznan Project:
Catholic parish in Kcynia [Exin], entry # 27 in 1858 score: Groom: 84%
Casimirus Andryciak (24) father: Jacobus Andrysiak, mother: Marianna
Antonina Pierschalska (19) father: Matthias Pierchalski, mother: Veronica

Then there are the Casimir and Antonia in the 1900
census in Grand Rapids. I can't find Martin and Mary
Stelmaszewski at that point but Casimir is living on
Chatham Street in Grand Rapids then. In the 1888-90
Grand Rapids directory, Martin is living on Chatham.
ALso on Chatham in Grand Rapids in 1900 is Valentine
Andrysiak and wife Agnes. All emigrated in 1881. It
says that Casimir and Antonia have been married for 41
years had had 2 children - both living. There are two
children living with them - if they are their
children, they were married for 20 years without
having children.

It was interesting to see our Uncle Bernie's picture at a earlier age than I remember him. My husband said they had one little girl that died at a early age. I remember my mother-in-law telling the story that she died shortly after she made her first holy communion. Henry, my husband remembers giving her a ride in a little wagon tht she had. Her bones were very brittle and she required a lot of care. I don't remember her at all because we were married in 1952 and she was already gone. Anyway this I remember Uncle Bernie was very nice and I remember Mary the few times that I saw her.
